The evolution of a project in glass and photography

Photo of the Week, May 14

rings of?

Another image with a “celestial” feel to it.  I love these!  Part of the reason I named this collection of images “Worlds Within” is that some look like things that should be of another universe.   Can’t you imagine the Enterprise sailing past something like this in the old episodes of Star Trek?

Finally, I have upgraded my Photoshop and Lightroom programs, so I hope to be able to do some extra fine tuning of upcoming images.  While I don’t like to do a whole lot to the images, sometimes the color really isn’t quite as true to the actual color of the glass as I would like, or there are a few extra bubbles that take away from the overall photo, so I do a bit of refining.  This one had some specks that weren’t a part of the glass and needed a bit of sharpening.  Much to explore!

How about Photo of the Week?

Ok, so my last post was titled “New Photo of the Day” and I thought that maybe I would try to post a photo a day.  I should have known better.  While I probably have enough photos to do a daily post, that just isn’t going to happen.  So instead I’m going to try a “Photo of the Week”.  Now that sounds like something I should be able to handle.  Maybe even once in a while I’ll do a couple of new photos if I have a really good week of picture-taking.

I’m still playing with the extension tubes and today took a few shots of an older piece of glass using just the 36mm extension.  It still allows me to get closer than I had before, and seems to get great detail.  These were taken with a Nikon D3200, with a Tamron 60mm F/2 Macro 1:1 plus the 36mm extension tube.

I am still amazed at the textures and details that the camera brings out.  So much beauty that has been hidden!

New Photo of the Day

For the last year and a half, or so, I have been taking my photos with a Nikon D3200 with a Tamron 60mm F/2 Macro 1:1 lens, and have been pretty happy with most of the images.  Sometimes, though, I find an interesting area that is smaller than I could shoot and enlarge to the size I really want (I have some images enlarged to 30″x40″, but they have to be pretty big to begin with).  I have been dreaming of the Nikon D800 because of it’s 36 megapixels, but the reality is that it is not yet in my budget – just need a few more big prints to go to new homes to justify it.   While I was at my local camera store (Camera Corner in Green Bay) drooling over the D800, the salesperson suggested trying extension tubes to allow me to get closer to the glass and thus increase the size of the photo.  Finally, I have been trying it out.  I can get much closer and stay in focus on some of those tiny portions of glass that have a lot going on.  My full frame now is approximately 12mm by 5-6mm and there is a lot of detail that I can now get in focus.  It will be interesting to see how some of these look enlarged.

Here is one photo I took last night.  The glass is a 6″ disc that looks a bit boring without just the right light.  Plus, as I find is often the case, most of the fun stuff can’t be seen without the magnification.  I’m calling this one “Eye of the Beast”.
